The acropolis is probably the most famous landmark in Athens. Called the sacred rock, the temples on the acropolis are widely considered the most important in the Western World, and have influenced our architecture since they were constructed during the late 5th century BC reign of Perikles, during the golden age of Athens. Most of the buildings were temples built to honor Athena, the patron goddess of Athens and were adorned with magnificent sculptures of the gods.
